Cheer up with Sweat Proof Make Up
When all you see is darkness and you feel hopeless, make yourself glow. A Sweatproof make up tutorial for you to glow this summer!
What Depression Is! Stigma and Judgment We Need to Cope With!
What Depression Is!
One of the things that annoy me the most when it comes to coping with depression is the ignorance.
It is okay to not know what something is, but if you don't know what something is, then what right do you have to comment on it?
I have been dealing with depression for a long time, all most 14 years! Is it fun? No! Have my friends and family been understanding and supportive? No!
Why? Because no one knows what it is!
So I am here to put it in Layman's terms what it is! And talk about the common misconception we have about it in the society these days.
1. It is a Feeling:
Right! This is the most heard misconception we have in the society! "Do you FEEL depressed?"
No it is NOT A FEELING!!! Look think about it, why would there be MEDICAL treatments if it is a feeling that you can just suppress? If I can "Pick myself up" I would have done that before you would have even thought to criticize me!
Ok, so you may have lost a loved one, and you are sad and have been crying your lungs out and can pick yourself up and go on with your everyday life. No that is short term - that is called grieving and not depression. Same with breakups in relationship. Stress is also not depression - although it could lead to depression.
In simple terms, Pain is a feeling, but what is causing the pain is not! Sadness, anger, fear, anxiety, confusion frustration etc, are feelings but the depression that is causing all this is not!
2. What Causes Depression?
There is no said cause for depression. It can be genetics, loss, stress, just something out of the blue. There is no cause. It just happens! Shocked? Just imagine what the person going through must feel like.
3. Is Depression a illness?
YES!!! It is a mental illness that actually has physical manifestation. There is a documentary that was on BBC that actually talks about it in depth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5YubjEqbZ8
Now if you can snap out of a sad phase in your life, then you don't have depression. I am talking about a person who has no issues in life, everything going great, but is going through this nightmare, that is called depression.
4. What happens when you have depression?
This is what I have been dying to tell you! I will list the things I have gone through and also others have gone through in the dark hole that is called depression.
* Loss of Sleep
* Fear
* Raised heart beat
* Suicidal thoughts
* Self harm
* Lack of motivation to do anything - even the things you love to do!
* Sense on no hope
* Isolation
* Socially Uncomfortable
* Over eating or Under eating
* Over sleeping or Insomnia
* Exaggeration of any feeling. (Example given below)
* Loss of care of any situation
* Exaggerated care of any situation
As you can see I have only listed a few of the things that can happen. Imagine yourself in a dark room, that has no door, no window, it is pitch black, you can't hear or see anything, you have no idea how you got there and you have no idea when you can escape from it... now how would you feel at that point.
5. Exaggeration of any feeling:
Ok, so let me give you a few examples:
Sadness:
Normal Person: "This can't be happening, I feel so horrible, I better call my friends and go out for a couple of drinks!"
Person with Depression: "Ok fine, these kind of things always happen to me. Great." (ONE Hour later) "I can't cope with this! I can't talk to my friends, they will think I am mad, no one cares about me anyway. Oh gosh why was I even born? I have no one. I am just a burden. I just want to die! Even if I die no one will care. My carcass will just rot in my room. This will never get better. If I end it, I may see light!"
Love:
Normal Person: "Awe I am so lucky to have this guy/girl I adore them to bits. Can't wait to spend the rest of my life with them."
Person with Depression: " Oh I love this guy/girl so much! I can't live without them. But will this last, will they leave me? If they leave me, I will die! Why do they love me, I am ugly and horrible, I am a crazy person! They can't possibly love me! But I love them more than anything in the world! I will die without them!"
Anger:
Normal Person: "OH F**K!!!"
Person With Depression: "Oh F**K! why does this always happen to me! I should have known! I hate my life! I want to just CUT myself! (throws things around, bangs their fist on the table) Why the f**k am I even alive??? Why can't I just die!!!"
Happiness:
Normal Person: "Woohoo I'm so happy! I wanna celebrate!"
Person With Depression: "Woohoo I am so happy! I wanna celebrate! (laughing way more than normal - because deep inside the person is thinking "how long is this gonna last") This can't be happening to me! Nothing good happens to me! I wonder what will go wrong. I wish I die before this happiness ends"
These were examples of how I felt and how other people with depression have also felt. Everyone is different, these were only examples. However can you see a pattern? No matter what the feeling is, the depressed person also has the loss of hope attached with it. There is a lot of cynicism and pessimism as well. Whatever they feel it is increased.
6. Depressed people try to kill themselves to gain attention as they are so lonely.
OK if you have ever thought this, you are the most STUPID person in history! Ok, there are people who try to fake suicide attempts in order to seek attention, but I am 100% sure that those people do not have depression!
Why would I risk my life in order to gain your attention???!! Isn't that the most stupid thing ever? People who fake it in order to seek attention are very careful (it is fake and drama), however a person with depression doesn't give a sh*t about what you think.
Depression is like as though you are standing on top a huge skyscraper that is on fire. Now you can't escape from that, your only option is to either burn to death or jump of the building and die. Rather than the slow painful burning death anyone would choose to jump of the skyscraper. Jumping off is called suicide.
At those very low moments, I have had voices in head screaming, pleading me to just kill myself because the pain was too much.
SUICIDE IS A FORM OF ESCAPE AND NOT A MEANS TO SEEK YOUR ATTENTION!!!
So I hope I have explained enough to enlighten you or give you a brief knowledge on depression. If you are a person who has a friend with depression, then please, please be understanding and just be there for them instead of asking them to snap out of it. Don't even say that everything is going to be alright, because you will come across as a liar.
If you are struggling with depression, then please leave comments on your experience. We are all in this together, the worst thing is to isolate yourself.
